CycleLove’s Top 10 Bike Blogs (2013 edition)
James Greig | September 27, 2013
The internet is an almost infinite sea of knowledge and entertainment but sometimes it feels like you are surfing the same handful of websites on rotation.
So — here are some ideas for cycling blogs to check out the next time you are short of cycling inspiration.
If you have any suggestions of your own please fire away in the comments below… I’d love to know what other blogs you are reading.
My Top 10 Blogs for 2013
In no particular order…
Ten Speed Hero
One of the best looking and best written cycling journals with a quirky style all of its own (just like their products, such as this Kitty Cat Cap)
Copenhagenize
Find out how Copenhagen transformed itself from being car to bike centric (36% of its population now cycle to work, and 50% use a bike on a daily basis). If you’re curious as to how the blog got it’s name, read this. At the time of writing this (around noon), the estimated distance ridden by Copenhageners today was already past 600,000km according to the handy counter on their site — so clearly they are doing something very right.
Vulpine
Vulpine aren’t my top cycle style brand to watch in 2013 just because I love their clothes — they also have a refreshingly honest and emotional approach to blogging. Be sure to check out the personal blog of Vulpine’s Jools Walker for more insights on London cycle fashion and culture.
The Inner Ring
My favourite source of road cycling news, specifically from the professional end of the spectrum. Not that I read much of it of course, but this was the blog I turned to in the summer to try and figure out what the hell was happening on the Tour de France other than some gangly guy who was almost British leading it.
Prolly is not probably
“Bikes, music, design, & bullshit” courtesy of one-man blogging machine John “Prolly” Watson who covers all aspects of North American bike culture from his home in Austin, Texas.
Rapha Survey
Beautifully shot portraits of people with their bikes from all over the world. This was one of the original inspirations for me to pick up my camera and start taking photos again (alongside Mr. C, of course) which meant I was especially chuffed to be featured myself last year.
Iva Jean
Where Iva Jean’s Seattle-based founder Ann DeOtte swoons over the latest bike style and fashion for women.
London Cyclist
Andreas was the first bike blogger I reached out to when I started CycleLove. His site is the ultimate point of reference for anyone getting to grips with riding in the capital and also features weekly reviews of new cycling clothing and kit.
The Collarbone
Cycling never looked so good as in this pro-peloton photography. Also available as a free iPad app.
Bikeminded
Imagine if all of London’s boroughs put as much thought into promoting cycling as Kensington and Chelsea do on their. (Yes, I’m thinking of you especially Hackney Council, as you have the highest percentage of people cycling to work in any borough and a distinct lack of anything interestingly bike related on your website).
Tumblr bike blogs (for good measure)
Big Ring Riding
Boys on bikes
Girls and bikes
Bike Pretty
Il Dolore
Ride Metal
Bicycle Art
Footnotes and notable omissions
Personally I find The Guardian Bike Blog to be a little hit and miss. There are some great articles but the bias seems to be towards the negative rather than the positive. Similarly The Times Fit For Cycling campaign makes for insightful if sometime grim reading. I’ve pretty much given up reading newspaper anyhow — I don’t buy printed ones any more and rarely read the news online. Not because I don’t care, but because my time and attention is scarce and most of the “news” is manufactured to sell newspapers. If something really important happened, people tell you about it anyhow. And I rather be discovering my own news on a Sunday instead of reading the same thing that everyone else is…
