Nootrobox’s Go Cubes are designed to give you the kick of coffee, with the relaxation of tea. But equally likely to make them appealing to cyclists/people-who-ride-bikes is their pocket-friendly form.

If “Coffee reinvented” sounds Silicon-Valley-esque, you’re on the right train of thought.

Emerging at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, Go Cubes maker’s Nootrobox claim they improve cognitive performance due to the nootropics.

To save you Googling that, here’s a definition:

Nootropics — also called smart drugs or cognitive enhancers — are drugs, supplements, or other substances that improve cognitive function, particularly executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation, in healthy individuals.

There’s something else about Go Cubes that might appeal to anyone taking a scientific approach to their fitness: the precise 50mg dose of caffeine in each cube.

With a regular cup of coffee it’s hard to say just how much caffeine there is… it depends on the bean, the process, and how good your barista is.

“Drink coffee, cycle faster” might seem like a no-brainer, but for the optimal effect, you need a more precise measure. And whilst the jury is still out on exactly  how much to drink (one recent study suggested a range of three to nine cups), at least with a Go Cube it’s easier to keep track on things.

Clinical trials are slated to happen in the near future, but here’s the active ingredient list so you can make your own call in the meantime:

• 50 mg of caffeine, about the equivalent of a half a cup of coffee
• 100 mg of L-Theanine (a green-tea extract thought to enhance the effects of  caffeine).
• 500% of your daily allowance of the vitamins B6 (which helps with processing food) and B12 (for healthy nerve and blood cells)

But there’s an equally important question… what are they like to eat?

Well, Go Cubes come in three flavours — mocha, pure drip, and latte — and are effectively cold-brew coffee reborn as chewy squares.

Which sounds a bit more palatable than chowing down on a caffeinated gel to us.
